about

This song is the song that I’ve told myself would be the last one I would write about my mom. It’s about the last movie we watched together, The Big Chill, and how even though there is really so much to be said, I couldn’t think of a thing. It was a lot like talking to a stranger where there are lots of lapses in conversation. It’s like I was looking for something to say all the time, but couldn’t, in the least, crack anything out of my egghead. And that’s time lost. Time I won’t get back and regret every day. And I know it’s not really my fault: if you can’t think of something to say, that doesn’t make you a bad person or something. It does make it hard to look on in hindsight and say: “Why didn’t I ask you more about your time in Germany?” or “What was your best moment in teaching?”

When we watched this movie—actually, when we watched St. Elmo’s Fire the day before—she asked me a lot about which character I saw myself as. It’s hard when you’re in the moment and don’t realize that the questions you’re being asked are actually much bigger than “Do you think you’re like Emelio or what?”

lyrics

I said: “This one’s a thinker.”
But your body’s so weak
At least I can exercise your mind

I should’ve wondered what you were thinking
Instead of pondering that film

There’s been so much to say
But so little time
And I never learned to gracefully apologize

There’s been so much to say
